I had my doubts when Timothée Chalamet was cast as Bob Dylan for the upcoming biopic A Complete Unknown. Don't get me wrong, I love Timmy T! But he was cast pre-Wonka musical, and I was like, "Can this guy even sing?" Can Mr. Cheekbones and Sequined Suits step into the young, scrappy, tousled energy of Bob Dylan, the man who allegedly introduced The Beatles to weed? Well, it turns out he really fuckin' can. The first photos of Chalamet on set as Bob Dylan are being released, and I've never been happier to be proven wrong.
You may or may not have seen the initial set photos (and subsequent memes) of Chalamet as Dylan a few days ago. These did nothing to quench my fears, but the latest batch of Tim Pics had me doing a double take—I really thought that was Bob Dylan for a second, from the sideburns to the frizzy curls to the Cool New Yorker style that's best paired with a cigarette and a guitar, à la Dylan himself.
To the untrained eye, the Bob Dylan look could easily be mistaken for indie NYU student reading a paperback copy of Howl in Washington Square Park. We know better, though. This is all about channeling that freewheelin' energy, tangled up in a jacket cropped at the hip, slim pants, a tight shirt, and boots with enough heel to make passersby worried you may topple over with one very strong gust of wind.
Really, the Dylan wardrobe is simple. Don't overthink it. Classic Wayfarer sunnies, a damn cool suede trucker jacket, and, of course, heeled suede boots, per the era's style. This isn't just a look that the likes of Chalamet and Dylan can pull off, but one that's easy to emulate and replicate. You can look like one of the greatest actors of our time looking like one of the greatest musicians of all time—just like that. Just don't forget to sling a six-string on your back.
