A lorry driver in his 40s has died following a single-vehicle accident on the N30 near Clonroche in Co. Wexford today.
The man died after the truck he was driving collided with a tree at Leeches Bend, on the New Ross side of Clonroche, on the N30 at approximately 10.15 a.m.
Gardaí and ambulances arrived shortly afterwards but, sadly, the driver and sole occupant of the articulated lorry was pronounced dead at the scene.
The N30 at Clonroche is currently closed and is expected to remain closed for a number of hours as Forensic Collision Investigators examine the scene. Local traffic diversions are in place.
Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.
Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were traveling on the N30 in the Clonroche area between 10 a.m. and 10.30 a.m. are asked to make this footage available to gardaí. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Enniscorthy Garda Station on 053 924 2580, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
The stretch of road where today’s accident occurred has been highlighted as dangerous many times in the past and local resident, Fine Gael Cllr Bridín Murphy has expressed her deep disappointment that the National Roads Authority has not taken action to improve the road for drivers’ safety.
“My thoughts are with the driver's family who lost his life this morning at Leeches Bend,” she said.
“There has been an increase in the frequency of accidents on that bend – this has been raised with the National Roads Authority constantly and nothing has been done to increase safety measures on the bend,” said Cllr Murphy.
"This isn't good enough and questions need to be answered as to why they have not done anything.”
