March is Truckee’s Red Cross Month
The Town of Truckee has proclaimed March to be Red Cross Month in celebration of the organization who selflessly help those in need in their most dire of times.
Jan Zabriskie, Vice Mayor of Truckee, presented the formal proclamation to Larry Bousquet, Red Cross Supervisor, on March 12, 2024. Jan noted that the “kindhearted individuals in our community exemplify Clara Barton’s commitment as they step up through the Red Cross of California Gold Country Region to provide a beacon of hope for our neighbors in need. Through their voluntary and selfless contributions, they make a lifesaving difference in people’s darkest hours, whether it’s delivering shelter, food and comfort during disasters; providing critical blood donations for hospital patients; supporting military families, veterans and caregivers through the unique challenges of service; saving lives with first aid, CPR and other skills; or bringing aid and reconnecting loved ones separated by global crisis.”
Truckee’s Red Cross delivers many services to the community. Most recently the team helped out those on last April’s Olympic Valley avalanche. The Disaster Action Team (DAT) has also helped with the Oroville Dam evacuation, Paradise Fire, local fires, search and rescue, apartment flooding, propane gas explosions and last but not least putting in smoke alarms for the Truckee Senior Center.
The Truckee Red Cross will be available for disaster events in the community. The Red Cross can provide shelter, food, and supplies to help make the community better.
As noted by Larry, “Truckee is a train town with numerous trains coming through every day carrying lumber, cars, livestock, poultry feed, gravel and more. A train derailment would be disastrous. Some trains carry toxic substances and come through town every day.”
That makes it even more important to have a team that can help out with everyone who is evacuated.
To continue supporting Truckee we need people who not only love our community but want to help when disaster occurs. To become a volunteer, please contact Jaime Brown, recruitment manager at (916) 268-0865 or online at RedCross.org/volunteer if you would like to learn more about joining the Red Cross.
