Kate Middleton spoke with her customary grace and composure. Her status as the most beloved member of Britain’s beleaguered royal family will only have been enhanced.

But any hope that last Friday’s announcement, that she is being treated for cancer, would put an end to the lurid conspiracy theories which have been doing the rounds online for weeks was soon dashed.
