England to return to stadium at Euro 2024 where Joe Cole scored best goal of World Cup

Watching England against Slovenia will bring back fond memories for Joe Cole - and the thousands in Cologne in 2006.

The Cologne Stadium will host Gareth Southgate's third and final group stage match at Euro 2024 in June meaning a return to the scene where Chelsea and West Ham hero Cole stunned Sweden's Andreas Isaksson with his long range effort.

Cole sent the section of travelling England fans wild when he put his side ahead only to end the game 2-2 .

Regardless, it's still commonly hailed as the best goal of that World Cup and England fans will be hoping they see more of the same when they visit Cologne.

The Three Lions were top of Group B after wins against Trinidad and Tobago and Paraguay 18 years ago and went through with this draw only to go out at the quarter-final stage to Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal.

"My greatest World Cup memory was in Germany 2006 when I scored against Sweden,” Cole said in 2014.

“It was one of the goals where everything happened perfectly. It’s not often people get to score goals like that at the World Cup. I look back now and I’m very proud of it."

The shine of Cole's goal was ever so slightly dulled by Henrik Larsson's last minute equaliser as Chelsea ace Cole had assisted Steven Gerrard for what England thought was the winner just five minutes earlier.

In total Cole earned 56 England caps during his career from 2001 to 2010, netting 10 goals in that time.

England boasted an incredibly star-studded team at the time, with Cole being just one of them.
