    What's the story

Holi, a vibrant celebration of colors, brings boundless joy and excitement to individuals of all ages. But amidst the festivities, safeguarding your child's delicate skin is crucial as it is prone to rashes. Dr. Geetanjali, M.D. Dermatology at Chirayu Medical College in Bhopal shares invaluable tips to ensure the well-being of your child's skin during this colorful occasion.

    Tip 1

    Pre-Holi skin and haircare

Before your child goes out to play, gently massage coconut or almond oil onto their exposed skin, including their face, arms, and any other areas exposed to colors. According to Dr. Geetanjali, this creates a protective barrier against harsh colors and prevents them from penetrating deep into the skin. Additionally, oil your child's hair to protect their scalp from dryness.

    Tip 2

    Protective eye-wear

Dr Geetanjali believes that encouraging your child to wear sunglasses or protective eyewear during Holi is essential to safeguard their eyes from potential harm. During the festivities, advise your child to keep their eyes closed while playing with colors. This precaution prevents direct contact between the colors and their eyes, reducing the risk of irritation, allergic reactions, or injuries.

    Tip 3

    Waterproof sunscreen

Applying a generous amount of waterproof sunscreen with a high SPF is crucial to safeguard your child's skin during Holi festivities, particularly if they'll be spending extended periods outdoors. Dr. Geetanjali shares that waterproof sunscreen is particularly beneficial during Holi, as it maintains its effectiveness even when your child sweats or gets wet while playing with water or colored powders.

    Tip 4

    Gentle cleanser

After the festivities, wash off the colored powders from your child's skin using mild soaps or natural DIY's Create a smooth paste by mixing gram flour (besan) with milk. Apply it to your child's skin, gently massaging in circular motions. The gram flour acts as a natural exfoliant, while milk moisturizes and soothes the skin, according to the expert.

    Tip 5

    Responsible play

Ensure your children understand the importance of not putting colors in their mouths. These colors contain harmful chemicals that can cause severe reactions such as vomiting and even poisoning if ingested. Educating children about responsible play fosters a safer environment, allowing everyone to fully enjoy the vibrant spirit of the festival without compromising their well-being.

    Tip 6

    Check allergies

It's crucial to remain vigilant and monitor your child's skin closely for any signs of allergic reactions during and after Holi celebrations. Dr. Geetanjali says to look out for symptoms like itching, redness, swelling, or rashes, which could indicate a reaction. If you observe any adverse symptoms, immediately cease further exposure to color and gently rinse off any remaining pigments from the skin.

    Tip 7

    Water balloon caution

Water balloons are a popular element of Holi festivities, but they can pose risks of injury. The force with which they hit can cause skin bruises or redness. When aimed at the face, they may lead to eye injuries such as corneal abrasions. Bursting near the ears can cause temporary hearing impairment. It's crucial to encourage responsible use of water balloons to prevent accidents.
