Mayo GAA is mourning the sad passing of Ger Brady, who represented his county at underage and senior level.

The Claremorris man, who was in his mid-40s, died yesterday at the Mayo Hospice following a brave battle with Motor Neurone Disease.

Brady’s illness came to public attention in February of last year when a fundraising drive, ‘Together for Ger’, was launched. He had been diagnosed with MND in August 2022.

The campaign was publicly backed by the Mayo senior footballers, with manager Kevin McStay bringing it to the attention of TG4 viewers after his team had beaten Kerry in the league that spring.

"An old friend of Mayo, I just want to mention Ger Brady. I just want to wish him well from everybody in our squad. I managed him under-21, a tremendous fella. We just want to wish him the very best. We're thinking about him and wishing only good things for him,” said McStay, who recalled Brady as a “tough cookie, a great competitor, we're expecting to see the same from him (in his battle with MND)."

The Claremorris clubman played minor for Mayo in 1996-97 and then U-21 in 1999-2000. He also enjoyed several run-outs with the senior team in ’98-99 and then, several years later, in the 2006 FBD League.

Starting at full-forward, he made his Connacht SFC debut against New York in 1999 and appeared as a sub in Mayo’s subsequent semi-final win over Roscommon.

The deceased will be sadly missed by his wife Karen (Bell), son Dylan, parents, siblings, relatives and friends.

His remains will repose at Gilligan’s Funeral Home, Claremorris this Saturday (5-7pm), and will arrive to St Colman’s Church for Funeral Mass on Sunday (2pm) with burial afterwards in St Colman’s Cemetery, Claremorris.
