Redondo girls lacrosse wins first showdown with Palos Verdes

Redondo and Palos Verdes are ranked third and seventh, respectively in the CIF-SS Division 1 poll and the teams met Wednesday in Bay League action

The road to the Bay League girls lacrosse championship figures to be difficult.

In the latest CIF-Southern Section Division 1/2 poll, Redondo is third, Mira Costa is sixth and Palos Verdes is seventh.

The Sea Hawks and Sea Kings met Wednesday for the first time this season, with Redondo (10-1, 1-0) pulling away in the second half for a 17-11 win.

PV (9-2, 0-1) led 6-5 at halftime. Kate Kenny scored six goals for Redondo with six ground balls. Caitlyn Kelly had four goals and seven ground balls.

The teams will meet again April 19 at PV.

PV will visit Mira Costa April 11 and host the Mustangs April 24.

Redondo’s first meeting with Mira Costa is next Friday at home.

BASEBALL

Mira Costa opens Bay League with win

Tarango, Belden had two hits apiece and Schermer and Dunn drove in two runs apiece in the 12-3 win for Mira Costa (8-6-1, 1-0) over Peninsula.

Alito McBean pitched six innings for the win. He allowed two earned runs, four hits, walked two and struck out 10.

The teams will meet Friday at Peninsula.

Santa Monica is off to a 5-0 start in the Bay League with sweeps over Peninsula and Redondo. The Vikings won Wednesday’s first meeting with Palos Verdes. The teams will meet Friday at Palos Verdes. Redondo is 0-3 after losing Wednesday 2-1 against Culver City. Dylan Leoff allowed five hits and two unearned runs in the loss. The teams meet Friday at Culver City.

Torrance rolls in win over Lawndale

Hector Chavez drove in five runs and Slater Nunez and Anthony Ramos pitched a five-inning no-hitter for the Tartars (9-4-1, 2-1) in the Pioneer League win.

The Pioneer League game to watch Friday is game two of the South-West series as the scene shifts to South. West won Wednesday’s meeting 3-2 in eight innings.

Serra snaps five-game losing streak

The Cavaliers had a five-game losing streak where they scored just three runs and were shut out three times.

Saturday, Serra defeated North Torrance 4-2 and Tuesday, back in Del Rey League play, defeated La Salle 6-3. Adrian Pineda allowed three hits and struck out six in 6 1/3 innings for the win. Marc Emerman drove in three runs and Daniel Johnson was 3 for 4.

The teams will meet at La Salle Friday.

SOFTBALL

Redondo shuts out Culver City

Scotti Weems, Kaya Aguirre and Melinda Smith had three hits apiece and Aguirre and Smith drove in three runs apiece as Redondo (10-5, 3-0) cruised to a 15-0 win over Culver City. Weems also scored four runs.

Bailey Murray struck out four in four innings. The Sea Hawks will visits Palos Verdes Friday.
