San Francisco: Mustafa Suleyman, one of the co-founders of Google's DeepMind, has been appointed as the CEO of Microsoft's newly-created AI division.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella welcomed Suleyman to the team, saying that he is "thrilled" to have the former Google executive onboard.
"Thrilled to have you lead Microsoft AI as we build consumer AI, like Copilot, that is loved by and benefits people around the world", Satya Nadela wrote on X.
Mustafa Suleyman has also confirmed his appointment as the CEO of Microsoft AI on his social media handles.
""I’m excited to announce that today I’m joining Microsoft as CEO of Microsoft AI. I’ll be leading all consumer AI products and research, including Copilot, Bing and Edge", he wrote on social media platform X.
Mustafa Suleyman, CEO and Co-Founder Inflection AI, was last year included by Time Magazine in its 2023 list of 100 Most Influential People in AI.
Suleyman was born to a Syrian taxi driver father and an English nurse mother in 1984 in London. Despite facing economic challenges, he demonstrated early leadership potential, eventually venturing into higher education.
Suleyman enrolled at Oxford University to study Philosophy and Theology but dropped out to team up with his friend and establish the Muslim Youth Helpline, a Telephone Counselling Service that swiftly evolved into one of the UK's foremost mental health support platforms.
In 2010, Suleyman co-founded the AI lab DeepMind with Demis Hassabis, his friend’s brother. The company soon rose to the top of the industry.
While Hassabis still runs DeepMind, Suleyman, 39, has since struck out on his own. DeepMind was acquired by Google in 2014, and Suleyman pivoted to work for Google itself in 2019, before departing to join the VC firm Greylock Partners in 2022.
Suleyman in the same year embarked on a new entrepreneurial journey, co-founding Inflection AI with LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman. Inflection AI quickly gained traction, raising significant funding and garnering support from industry giants like Microsoft and NVIDIA.
Interestingly, a number of other employees of Inflection AI, including Karén Simonyan, will join Microsoft AI along with Suleyman.
"My friend and longtime collaborator Karén Simonyan will be Chief Scientist, and several of our amazing teammates have chosen to join us", he added.
Mikhail Parakhin and Misha Bileno, who currently lead the teams working on Copilot, Bing, and Edge, will now report to Suleyman.
