Man charged in Kerry murder case free from custody after €27,000 bail approved in court

Thomas Carroll, who is accused of the murder in late February of Castlemaine man Paddy O’Mahony Snr is no longer in state custody after bail was finalised in Tralee District Court this week.

Mr Carroll (66) of 25 Brookway, Clonmel, County Tipperary, was charged with murdering Mr O’Mahony (84) on Saturday, February 24, at Mr O’Mahony’s home in Ballyraemeen Upper.

Mr Carroll is represented by Kerry solicitor Pat Mann. Mr Mann and his legal team lodged a bail application in the High Court, which was granted last week. An independent surety of €20,000 was sought and Jim Cahill appeared in Tralee District Court this week to confirm he had lodged the money for Mr Carroll to get bail. Judge David Waters asked Mr Cahill did he understand that if Mr Carroll did not comply with the bail terms or does not attend court that bail would be removed and Mr Cahill would lose the money.

"I understand that,” he told the told the court.

Mr Carroll lodged his own bond of €7,000 for bail. The case has now been adjourned to April 17 for mention for the book of evidence. Mr Carroll does not have to attend unless the book of evidence is ready.

Mr Carroll, a former soldier, first appeared before Tralee District Court on February 28 after he was formally charged that morning with the murder of Mr O’Mahony, also a former soldier. Mr O’Mahony, a father of five, was a firearms expert, collector, and dealer, and he was among the best-known figures within the Irish target-shooting scene.
