Child abduction, chase ends in crash on I-440 as man taken into custody

A man was arrested after two children were kidnapped on Thursday afternoon in Lumberton, which involved a multi-county chase that ended in a crash.

The man was placed in handcuffs after crashing into a tractor-trailer along Interstate 440 with the children in the car.

Lumberton police said the man kidnapped a 1-year-old and 4-year-old just before 4 p.m. from an Econo Lodge in Lumberton. The children's mother called 911 and described the man and his vehicle to dispatchers.

Authorities said the man failed to stop at a traffic stop and a chase ensued into Johnston County, eventually sending Johnston County deputies into Raleigh.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol spotted the man's vehicle before an Amber Alert was issued. The crash occurred near the Brentwood Road exit around 4:45 p.m. Thursday

Several Johnston County Sheriff's Office vehicles were parked near a white sedan that collided into a tractor-trailer. Deputies were searching inside the sedan. Sky 5 showed one child being carried into an ambulance.

The man was not identified by police. WRAL News is working to learn more.
