Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is set to host a landmark meeting aimed at fostering synergy between farmer cooperatives and higher educational institutions, with a special emphasis on youth involvement in agriculture today on Wednesday.

Key stakeholders from JNU and the National Cooperative Union of India (NCUI) will convene to chart a path towards integrating farmer cooperatives into the academic sphere. The meeting, organized jointly by JNU, NCUI, and the World Cooperative Education Foundation (WCEF), will commence at 2 pm and extend until 5 pm at the prestigious JNU Convention Centre, Lecture Hall 2.

Notable attendees include esteemed figures such as NCUI President Dileep Sanghani, Dr. Chandra Pal Singh Yadav, President of the International Cooperative Alliance for Asia and the Pacific (ICA-AP), Satish Marathe, RBI Central Board Member and Dr. Bijender Singh, President of the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED).

Central to the agenda is the establishment of campus cooperatives within JNU, a move poised to directly connect farmers with educational institutions. This initiative aligns with recent governmental efforts to bolster cooperatives and farmer-producer organizations (FPOs) to empower agricultural supply chains and ensure equitable returns for farmers.

The meeting aims to explore innovative models for forming collectives like campus cooperatives, leveraging JNU’s considerable resources to bolster farmer support initiatives. Discussions will revolve around formalizing cooperative structures within educational institutions and devising strategies for JNU to contribute to nationwide farmer development endeavors.

The objectives encompass developing campus cooperatives, fostering collaboration between NCUI and JNU, catalyzing youth participation in the cooperative movement, and advancing the vision of a prosperous and sustainable agricultural sector in India. With its diverse community of residents, faculty, and students, JNU stands as a promising platform for driving meaningful collaborations that benefit both farmers and educational institutions.

By harnessing the potential of cooperative partnerships, the meeting endeavors to pave the way for a transformative paradigm in farmer-education integration, heralding a new era of agricultural sustainability and youth empowerment in India.
