Former head of UK Civil Service selected as next Diageo chair

Diageo has confirmed the next chair of the board ahead of current chair Javier Ferrán’s retirement in 2025. Sir John Manzoni, former chief executive of the UK Civil Service and Diageo board member since 2020, will take over from Ferrán on or after the latter’s planned retirement in February. 

 

Ferrán has served on the Diageo board since July 2016, and was appointed as chair in January 2017. He commented: “It has been a true privilege to lead Diageo’s board during a period in which we have achieved significant growth, reshaped our portfolio and geographic footprint, and navigated widespread global volatility. I look forward to working with John, the board and all my Diageo colleagues to ensure a smooth transition over the coming months.”

 

Manzoni added: “It will be a privilege to take on this role and to succeed Javier, whose leadership and acumen have been so valuable to our business and to board colleagues.

Manzoni held the role of chief executive, UK Civil Service from 2014 to 2020. His other current positions include chair of energy business SSE plc and non-executive director of KBR, Inc. From 2004 to 2015, Manzoni was a non-executive director drinks company SAB Miller, which owned brands including beers Foster’s, Miller, and Pilsner Urquell.

 

Over the next year, Manzoni will work with the board and Ferrán ahead of the role handover. Upon Ferrán’s retirement, Manzoni will also be his successor as chair of the Nomination Committee.
