Bill Gates is currently scheduled to speak at CERAWeek by S&P Global on Thursday, according to the event’s website.

The Microsoft co-founder, and founder of Breakthrough Energy and TerraPower, will be taking part in a “luncheon and dialogue” with S&P Global Vice Chairman, and CERAWeek Chairman, Daniel Yergin, with the session theme being “energy markets”, the site outlines.

In a release sent to Rigzone, S&P Global noted that Gates will join Yergin for “a fireside chat delving into the readiness of emerging clean technologies for investment and deployment and the economic opportunities they present for energy communities especially”.

“We are pleased again to welcome Bill Gates to CERAWeek,” Yergin said in the release.

“His prolific and creative career across business, technology, philanthropy and - through his work as founder of Breakthrough Energy - climate change and the energy transition stands apart in both its scope and impact,” he added.

“At a time of profound and accelerating change, his unique perspective on the future will be an important and timely addition to the critical dialogues taking place at this year’s conference,” Yergin continued.

According to its website, Breakthrough Energy’s aim is “to inspire the world to develop and scale the critical solutions we need to reach net-zero emissions - so everyone can enjoy affordable, abundant clean energy”.

“To get to zero, the world needs a comprehensive approach to innovation at every step from the lab to the global marketplace. Breakthrough Energy’s broad network of partnerships and programs approaches each challenge from multiple angles,” the site adds.

TerraPower energy describes itself as a nuclear innovation company. The company’s innovators “create technologies to provide safe, affordable and abundant carbon-free energy,” according to TerraPower’s site.

“They devise ways to use heat to drive economic growth while decarbonizing industry. And they develop processes to extract radioisotopes for medical use in lifesaving cancer treatments,” the site adds.

CERAWeek is taking place from March 18-22 at the Hilton Americas in Houston, Texas. This year’s conference will “explore strategies for a multidimensional, multispeed, and multifuel energy transition”, S&P Global’s release highlighted, pointing out that the CERAWeek 2024 conference program will look at “key themes” related to topics such as policy and geopolitics, company strategies, technology and innovation, new supply chains for net zero, and climate and sustainability.

Other speakers at the event include Jennifer Granholm, the Secretary of Energy for the U.S. Department of Energy, Amin H. Nasser, the President and CEO of Saudi Aramco, Darren Woods, the Chairman and CEO of Exxon Mobil Corporation, Mike Wirth, the Chairman of the Board and CEO of Chevron, Wael Sawan, the CEO of Shell, Patrick Pouyanné, the Chairman of the Board and CEO of TotalEnergies, Murray Auchincloss, the CEO of BP, and Kadri Simson, the Commissioner of Energy for European Commission.

Yergin is a highly respected authority on energy, international politics, and economics, and a Pulitzer Prize winner, S&P Global’s site states. Yergin’s book The Prize: The Epic Quest for Oil Money and Power was awarded the Pulitzer Prize, was a number one New York Times bestseller, and has been translated into 20 languages, the site adds.

S&P Global provides “essential intelligence”, according to its website, which notes that the company “enable[s] governments, businesses, and individuals with the right data, expertise, and connected technology so that they can make decisions with conviction”.

“From helping our customers assess new investments to guiding them through ESG and energy transition across supply chains, we unlock new opportunities, solve challenges and accelerate progress for the world,” the site adds.
