Thieves Abandon Safe with $300,000 of Jewelry, Watches

March 20, 24 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - Thieves abandoned a safe containing $300,000 of jewelry and watches after dragging it from a jewelry store in California, USA.
Police were closing in on the culprits when the safe fell from the van they were driving along an off-ramp from the Interstate 580 highway.
They broke into Grand Jewelry Repair, in Oakland, wrapped a chain around the large safe, and used a winch to drag it out.
Christopher Tran, son of the owners, said they first used a rope, but it snapped.
He told KTVU FOX 2 insurance would cover the damage, but he feared his parents, originally from Vietnam, would now retire early after running the store for 34 years.
CCTV grab shows the safe being dragged by the raiders' van.
