Leo Varadkar is the seventh leader of his party to head the Irish government, in an office he held for just short of seven years.
The extraordinary surprise announcement of his exit from the office of Taoiseach and leader of Fine Gael compounds difficulties in ranking him among his six party predecessors: WT Cosgrave, John A Costello, Liam Cosgrave, Garret FitzGerald, John Bruton, and Enda Kenny.
