Subaru Corporation has joined forces with Dell Technologies to enhance driver safety by leveraging the combination of AI and high-performance storage solutions. This collaboration underscores the significant impact of AI on revolutionizing transportation safety for drivers, passengers, and pedestrians alike.
Arthur Lewis, President of the Infrastructure Solutions Group at Dell Technologies, highlighted Subaru’s dedication to innovation through data-driven approaches and entrusted Dell Technologies to support this journey by providing AI development infrastructure. The integration of Dell PowerScale storage as an AI-ready platform enables Subaru to integrate, analyze, and utilize data effectively, driving meaningful insights that advance human progress and transform industries.
By selecting Dell PowerScale network attached storage systems, Subaru can efficiently store, manage, and utilize vast amounts of data to enhance the development of its next-generation EyeSight Driver Assist Technology. Currently deployed in over 5.5 million EyeSight-equipped vehicles, this technology monitors traffic movement, optimizes cruise control, and alerts drivers of lane departures. PowerScale meets the growing IT demands for AI modeling and validation while offering scalability and performance enhancements, regardless of data location.
Subaru’s AI development base, SUBARU Lab, benefits significantly from the adoption of Dell PowerScale systems, allowing for the storage of approximately 1,000 times more files than previous platforms. This infrastructure upgrade enables Subaru to enhance AI image analysis by accessing stored files across SUBARU Lab and Tokyo offices, facilitating seamless data scalability and utilization across locations, thus expanding business opportunities.
Takashi Kanai, Deputy Chief of SUBARU Lab and Manager of ADAS Development Department, PGM (Advanced Integrated System), Engineering Division, emphasized Subaru’s commitment to reliability and safety enhancements through AI development initiatives. Leveraging Dell PowerScale as the underlying infrastructure for EyeSight Driver Assist Technology enables Subaru to continue advancing AI initiatives to enhance driver safety effectively.
EyeSight, known for being the world’s first system to utilize stereo camera technology for driver assistance features, including pre-collision braking and adaptive cruise control, has consistently received top ratings from independent agencies worldwide. Subaru’s research, based on data from Japan’s Institute for Traffic Accident Research and Data Analysis (ITARDA), has demonstrated the remarkable safety performance of EyeSight-equipped vehicles in Japan, with an accident rate as low as 0.06%.
Dell PowerScale, renowned as the world’s most flexible, secure, and efficient scale-out file storage system, empowers SUBARU Lab to tier data effectively and retrieve information across public, private, or hybrid cloud environments. The solution’s data visualization capability enables quick search and retrieval of data for AI still image analysis, further enhancing Subaru’s AI development capabilities.
