Rep. Madeleine Dean (D-PA) is known for her partisan allegiances in Congress. Unfortunately, those allegiances tend to make the country less safe.
Dean regularly claims she is working to help people but consistently votes for bills that endanger them. The latest example is Dean’s vote against the Laken Riley Act — a bill that, among other things, requires the “Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to detain certain non-U.S. nationals (aliens under federal law) who have been arrested for burglary, theft, larceny, or shoplifting.”
Why would any representative be against such a bill? It’s a question many of the residents in Dean’s congressional district want to know the answer to, given she is up for reelection in November. But then again, you could probably find the answer in her voting history. For instance, Dean not only voted against the Laken Riley Act but co-sponsored the 2021 George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. Both legislative decisions did more to endanger people in the country than protect them.
The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act lowered the “criminal intent standard — from willful to knowing or reckless — to convict a law enforcement officer for misconduct in a federal prosecution.” It also limited “qualified immunity as a defense to liability in a private civil action against a law enforcement officer” and gave “administrative subpoena power to the Department of Justice (DOJ) in pattern-or-practice investigations.”
Sentiments about Floyd aside, this bill had many valid criticisms. For example, the Heritage Foundation claimed the bill “would make cops’ jobs more difficult” and would “take away tools that help keep police officers safe.” Additionally, the National Review called it “a misnomer” and a “poisonous police reform bill.” They also claimed it “wouldn’t advance justice or any other reasonable goal.” The last sentence seems to be indicative of Dean’s take on criminal behavior. She seems to think the bad guys are the good guys and the good guys don’t deserve justice.
Those are just two examples. Elected by the citizens in Pennsylvania’s 4th Congressional District, Dean routinely prioritizes the protection of criminals over the safety of the innocent. Her record should raise numerous red flags.
Consider the Protect Our Communities from DUIs Act. This bill made “driving while intoxicated or impaired a ground for (1) barring a non-U.S. national (alien under federal law) from admission into the United States, or (2) deporting the individual.” It seems common sense and something that should enjoy universal support. There’s no legitimate reason as to why anyone, let alone a member of Congress, would support a person convicted of drunk driving, which endangers other drivers on the road, for citizenship. Yet not Dean, who went against the safety and protection of other law-abiding citizens. She voted against this bill.

There was also the “Protect Our Law Enforcement with Immigration Control and Enforcement Act of 2023.” The purpose of this bill was “to make the assault of a law enforcement officer a deportable offense, and for other purposes.” Again, this seems like a commonsense idea, right? Someone who is trying to get citizenship in the U.S. shouldn’t be assaulting police officers. However, not according to Madeleine Dean. She once again sided with criminal illegal immigrants and voted against this bill.
It is time Dean answers why she insists on protecting criminals. Her votes threaten the safety of everyone. It shouldn’t have to be said, but every politician should be in favor of holding criminals accountable. The fact that Dean doesn’t is telling. Moreover, if Dean doesn’t want to punish criminals for their actions, voters should hold her accountable for her failures as a politician this November.
