Wheatmore's Ellie Garrison nine goals away from NCHSAA's career record

Wheatmore senior Ellie Garrison already has the N.C. High School Athletic Association record for most goals in a single season.
Now she's within striking distance (no pun intended) of the career mark.
Garrison, an Appalachian State recruit who ended last year with 96 goals in 24 games, has 217 career goals, which is tied for second-most with Carolyn Lindsay of South View. Lindsay, who graduated in 2003, went on to play at UNC-Greensboro.
The record-holder (which as of publishing time is not listed in the NCHSAA record book) is Woods Charter's Isabel Pearce with 226. Pearce scored 80 goals her senior year, which set the then-single-season record in 2017. She went on to play at UNC-Greensboro.
Wheatmore won the NCHSAA 2A title during Garrison's sophomore year and was runner-up last season. Garrison had 29 goals in 12 games as a freshman (a year shortened by the pandemic), followed by 77 as a sophomore and the 96 from a year ago.
She is a two-time first-team HSOT all-state player, earning spots in 2023 and 2022.
Wheatmore has two games this week — at home against Randleman on Monday and at Eastern Randolph on Wednesday.
