Westbound Interstate 76 is closed north of Commerce City after a semitrailer hit the outer edge of the Dahlia Street Bridge, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

The crash was reported 2:35 p.m. involving the semitrailer and multiple vehicles, according to the Colorado State Patrol. Eastbound I-76 was also closed until 5 p.m.

Westbound I-76 is still closed between U.S. 6 and East 74th Avenue/Colo. 224 as of 5 p.m., according to CDOT.

CDOT’s bridge team is evaluating the damage and road crews are working on clearing the truck from the roadway and cleaning up spilled oil, debris and equipment that fell from the truck, agency officials said in a news release.

There are significant traffic backups on I-76 and drivers should avoid the area, according to the agency.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
