Chapel Hill, N.C. — UNC football coach Mack Brown addressed the recent arrests of three football players involved in a fatal crash in Chapel Hill in January.
On Monday, Brown said Travis Shaw, Zach Rice and Malaki Hamrick will all be part of the team's spring practice period. The three, who were charged in relation to the crash, will be disciplined by the program after the legal process plays out.
"We had three guys that got misdemeanors that are going through the legal process right now," Brown said. "We'll let the legal process take its course and then what we will do is, obviously, they'll have consequences with disciplinary action within our program."
A court document shows Rice was closely following another car and his car was speeding at 124 mph in a 45 mph zone. The car Rice was following was the car that crashed, killing 20-year-old Molly Elizabeth Rotunda, a passenger.
Rice is a sophomore from Lynchburg, Virginia. Shaw is a junior from Greensboro and Hamrick is a sophomore from Shelby.
"We're disappointed anytime any of our guys get mentioned in something that's against the law," Brown said.
Documents indicate the leading car was driven by 20-year-old UNC student Flemeeja Brewer, who survived the crash and faces multiple felony charges. WRAL News was told street racing may have been a factor in the crash.
UNC's spring game is set for April 20.
