In her address at the India Today Conclave, India Today Group Vice-Chairperson and Executive Editor-in-Chief, Kalli Purie, emphasized that the media cannot assume the role of the opposition. Speaking during the culmination of the two-day event, Purie highlighted the significance of media’s position as observers rather than active participants in political confrontations.

Purie’s remarks were made against the backdrop of the Election Commission’s announcement of the schedule for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. With the political climate intensifying, media outlets are anticipated to face increased scrutiny and criticism.

“We are observers in this boxing match. We are not the players. If one side is weak or doesn’t show up, we cannot jump into the ring. This is not fear. This is a matter of rules, roles, and competence. We are the medium. We are not the message,” asserted Purie, underlining the media’s role in facilitating access to primary sources of information.
