Prepare your Galaxy device for the One UI 6.1 update

The Android 14-based One UI 6.0 update for Galaxy smartphones and tablets started rolling out almost six months back, and even though that update still appears to be expanding to new markets for some devices as of March 2024, Samsung has One UI 6.1 almost ready to go.

One UI 6.1 is unique for a minor One UI update, at least for flagship Galaxy devices launched in 2023, as it brings several big AI features that can change the way you use your phone. For other devices, One UI 6.1 will be similarly dull as previous .1 releases.

Still, whether or not your device will get the Galaxy AI features that are included in One UI 6.1, it would be a good idea to make some preparations so the update process goes as smoothly as possible once the rollout commences (it should begin in some markets before the end of March 2024).

The most important thing to do is to backup all your data to your Samsung or Google account or to a microSD card if your device has one (if not, you can back up your data to an external USB stick). You can also back up everything to a PC using Samsung's Smart Switch software.

The next step to take is to make sure your device is running the latest software/firmware that is available right now. While these updates don't always need your device to be running the most current firmware, it's a good idea to be ready so you don't have to waste any time when One UI 6.1 arrives and can upgrade as quickly as possible.

Other recommended actions include freeing up some storage space if necessary and updating all your installed apps. You should also keep your phone or tablet sufficiently charged. Installing updates requires Galaxy devices to be charged to at least 20%, but it's better to have a safety buffer and have the device charged to 30% or more.

Check out our One UI 6.0 prepartion guide for more details and instructions on how you can perform the actions recommended above. If you want to find out whether your phone or tablet is eligible for the update, check out this exhaustive list.
