Summit County skier dies after hitting tree at Keystone Resort

A 58-year-old Summit County resident is dead following an accident at Keystone Resort around 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, March 14.
The man was skiing on Flying Dutchman, a blue trail on Dercum Mountain, when he hit a tree and subsequently died at the scene, according to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.
No one else was involved in the accident, but another skier witnessed the incident.
The man was wearing a helmet.
“Our hearts go out to the family and friends affected by the tragic loss of life at Keystone Ski Resort,” Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons said in a statement. “We are actively investigating the incident and working closely with resort officials to ensure the safety of all visitors to our community’s beloved slopes.”

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office included a note reminding skiers, snowboarders and other adventurers to “always practice safe snow activity habits” and to be aware of the risks associated with these activities.
