In light of efforts to rejuvenate the aviation industry, severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Malaysian government has made a pivotal decision to hike the passenger service charges (PSC) at all its airports. This strategic move is aimed at accelerating the sector’s recovery, necessitating an upsurge in Malaysia’s airport fees by as much as RM 73. Consequently, this escalation will directly influence the cost of flight tickets, making air travel through Malaysia notably more expensive.
Passenger service charges, a fee imposed on travelers at airports, are intended to fund the expenses related to security and maintenance. With the new adjustments, every individual traveling through Malaysian airports, which include prominent ones like Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi, will encounter these increased charges. This revision in charges is set to persist until the year 2026, indicating a significant period during which passengers will need to budget for higher travel costs.
The specifics of the new passenger service charges are as follows: For domestic flights, the departure charge is set at RM 11, with a transfer charge of RM 7, applicable across all airports. For international flights, passengers departing from Kuala Lumpur International Airport 1 will be levied a PSC of RM 73 for departures and RM 42 for transfers. Conversely, international flights through Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 and other Malaysian airports will incur a departure PSC of RM 50 and a transfer PSC of RM 29. Additionally, Senai International Airport has its unique fee structure, charging a domestic departure PSC of RM 16, a transfer fee of merely RM 1, and for international departures, a PSC of RM 50 along with a transfer charge of RM 29.
This overhaul in passenger service charges underscores the Malaysian government’s commitment to reviving its aviation sector, albeit at the expense of travelers, who will now have to dig deeper into their pockets to afford air travel within and through Malaysia until 2026.
