Back-to-back 1A champ Mount Airy promotes Austin Taylor to head football coach

Mount Airy High School, the back-to-back defending 1A state champions have a new head football coach after a six week search.
The Granite Bears announced that Austin Taylor has been promoted to the role. Taylor has been serving as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. He is an alum of Mount Airy. Taylor graduated in 2013.
Taylor replaces J.K. Adkins, who left to take the head coaching job at his alma mater Freedom High School in Morganton.
In addition to the back-to-back state championships, Mount Airy has North Carolina's longest active winning streak at 30 games. Taylor and company will look to keep that streak going when the season begins on Aug. 23.
Taylor was a three-sport athlete for the Granite Bears. He was the team's starting quarterback as a junior and senior and was responsible for 38 total touchdowns in his career. He also played defensive back and compiled over 175 total tackles and 16 interceptions in his career.
