The Tourism, Hospitality, Media, MICE, Entertainment & Events Committee-2024 of the Federation of Telangana Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FTCCI) launched a groundbreaking initiative today named ‘Athithi Devobhava’.

The campaign, aptly titled “Atithi Devo Bhava” meaning “Guest is God,” aims to rebrand auto rickshaw and cab drivers as tourism ambassadors. Recognizing that these drivers serve as the initial point of contact for tourists upon arrival in any city, the campaign emphasizes the pivotal role their conduct plays in shaping the perception of the destination.

The primary objective of the Tourism Committee’s initiative is to instill a sense of importance among these drivers and provide them with training in basic etiquette, English language proficiency, as well as first aid and CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) skills.

Meela Jayadev, President of FTCCI, emphasized the significance of auto and cab drivers as the true representatives of a city, region, or country. Their comprehensive knowledge of the locale, courteous behavior, fair pricing, and hospitable attitude towards guests greatly contribute to leaving a positive impression on visitors about the destination.

Furthermore, these drivers are not merely transport providers but also serve as valuable sources of information and guidance for tourists, offering insights into historical landmarks, local cuisine, cultural attractions, and more.

The campaign was inaugurated at five key locations on Wednesday under the supervision of Rakhi Kankaria, Chairperson of the Tourism Committee. Over 200 individuals participated in the initiative, which included educational sessions held at various transportation hubs.

Highlighting the crucial role taxi drivers play in the tourism sector’s branding and promotion, Mohan Lal, Co-chairman of the Committee, emphasized the importance of their role in shaping tourists’ experiences.

Upcoming programs scheduled for Thursday and Friday will further extend the reach of the initiative, with sessions planned at prominent locations including GMR Airport and various automobile centers across the city.

The initiative received extensive support from the Government of Telangana, the Tourism Department, as well as corporate entities such as GMR Hyderabad, Apollo Hospitals, Kothari Group, and others. Participants were provided with first aid kits by Apollo Emergency and Agromech.

In the near future, the Tourism Committee plans to introduce QR codes to be displayed prominently in all autos and cabs, allowing tourists to access comprehensive tourism-related information. Additionally, plans are underway to develop an audiobook as a self-learning tool, available in multiple languages, to further enhance the capabilities of these ambassadors in facilitating tourists’ experiences.
