Steamboat boys lacrosse opens season with offensive dominance

It was a scoring onslaught Tuesday night at Gardner Field when the Steamboat Springs boys lacrosse team hosted Summit for the season opener.
Steamboat sophomore Lyle Henninger scored the Sailors’ first goal of the year and earned a hat trick in the opening minutes of the second quarter en route to a 16-3 Sailors victory.
By halftime, six different Sailors had scored in the game, and the Steamboat defense put forth a strong effort to allow just three Summit goals in the game, and spent limited time in the defensive zone.
Last season, Steamboat suffered just two regular-season losses and took a third hit in the state quarterfinal as the No. 4 seed to No. 5 Evergreen. This season, the Sailors look to be a powerhouse once again and hope to overcome the quarterfinal hump.
Up next for the Sailors is a road game Thursday against Mullen before the team returns home to host Cheyenne Mountain at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Gardner Field.
