While a lot of folks consider 65 inches to be quite a large TV, the truth is that if you really want to have a massive TV for your home theater setup, then 85 inches is probably the biggest you can find without having to buy a specialty TV. 85-inch TCL S4 4K TV — $800, was $1,000
TCL has grown in popularity the last few years, as it makes TVs with features that generally outperform their price point. You’ll find an excellent 4K image with the TCL S4. It boasts HDR PRO technology that provides enhanced contrast, accurate colors, and includes the fine details in all of your favorite content. This is a great TV for gamers, movie lovers, and sports fans as it utilizes a feature known as Motion Rate 240 to create exceptional motion clarity, even during fast-paced action.
This should be a particularly enticing TV if smart TV features matter to you. The TCL S4 uses the Google TV smart OS platform. This is one of the better smart platforms, particularly if you watch movies and TV shows across several different streaming services. You’ll get built-in access to things like the best new movies to stream on Netflix, Hulu, Prime, Max, and more, and the Google TV interface does a good job of organizing your favorite content from all of your streaming service, as well as present new content from places you may not otherwise think to look.
LG 85-inch UR7800 4K webOS TV — $900, was $1,250
It’s not often you find large TVs from big brands at under $1,000, so we’re happy to see this LG deal, especially since it has some really neat features. For example, it comes with an AI-powered internal processor that can help adjust the image to make it more detailed while also improving the audio that you get out of the speakers. It also comes with things such as HDR10 support, as well as HLG, an HDR standard used by many sports broadcasters, so if you’re buying this TV to watch sports on, then it’s an excellent option, especially given its size.
LG 85-inch UQ75 4K webOS TV — $950, was $1,100
One of the best things about this 85-inch UQ75 TV from LG is that it comes with a base refresh rate of 120Hz, which makes it a perfect TV for watching high-impact content like sports, action films, and things of that nature. It’s also great for those who game often, as both the consoles and higher-end gaming PCs can take advantage of the improved framerate for a better gaming experience. You’ll also be happy to know that it comes with both HDR10 and HLG, so it’s perfect for watching sports if you want it specifically for that. It’s also integrated into all the digital assistants and gives you access to all the apps you’re looking for, and then some.
TCL 85-inch Q6 QLED 4K Google TV — $1,000, was $1,300
TCL has some excellent TVs for watching sports, and this 85-inch Q6 is no exception. While it doesn’t have the typical 120Hz refresh rate you might expect for more action-oriented viewing, it does have support for HLG, the HDR standard most broadcasters use. It also supports HDR10 and HDR10+, so if you enjoy watching films and TV shows, then you’re still getting some excellent contrast and image, making this a rather versatile TV. As for those who game, you’ll be happy to know that it comes with AMD FreeSync and an auto-game mode which lowers the input lag as much as possible, which is a nice little touch.
Samsung 85-inch CU8000 4K Tizen TV — $1,400, was $1,600
If you prefer being in the Samsung ecosystem, then this is probably one of the best mid-to-high-tier TVs you can grab, especially if you want something that’s pretty large. It has all the specs you’d expect, such as HDR10+, HLG for sports, and a 120Hz refresh rate which is perfect for pretty much anything you’d like to watch or play. That said, it does only have edge lighting, which means there isn’t any zonal light control that helps with things like contrast, although that’s certainly not a dealbreaker given everything else you get in the process.
Sony 85-inch X80K 4K Google TV — $1,400, was $1,600
Another excellent option if you don’t necessarily need to be in the Samsung ecosystem, there are a lot of great features in this TV too, including the fact that it’s built on the Google TV platform. That means that you have access to the whole Google ecosystem, which is great for those who are already in it. On top of that, there is a whole bevy of features from the HDR10 and HLG to the 120H base refresh rate, making this another versatile option that will work for pretty much anybody. Also, it is direct-lit, which means it also has lights behind the screen to help with better light uniformity and contrast, so if you don’t care about being in the Samsung ecosystem, this is probably a better choice.
Samsung 85-inch Q60C QLED 4K Tizen TV — $1,600, was $2,000
What’s interesting about the Q60C is that it comes with dual-led backlighting, which is a unique thing where there are both warm and cool LEDs that can help provide deeper and more realistic contrast based on what you’re watching. Along with that, you get an internal 4k upscaler so you can watch your older content with higher resolution and access to Object Tracking Sound Lite, which gives you a deeper and more complex 3D audio experience, especially if you have other Samsung speakers that you can combine with Q-Symphony. Essentially, the Q60C is where you start getting into the very high-end of what Samsung has to offer.
Samsung 85-inch Q80C QLED 4K Tizen TV — $1,900, was $2,200
The Q80C is a lot like the Q60C, except it does everything a lot better because it has a more powerful chip under the hood. For example, they both have 4k upscaling, but the Q80C does a much better job of it, as well as handling 3D audio way better. So, if you’re a fan of watching older content or have a lot of stuff that takes advantage of 3D audio, this is a perfect option. Even if you don’t, it can still manage a 120Hz base refresh rate, which makes it very versatile, as does the support for HDR 10+ and HLG.
Sony 85-inch Bravia XR X90L 4K Google TV — $2,000, was $2,200
The Sony XR X90L is really taking things to the next level with Full Array LED lighting, giving you one of the best image quality and fidelity you’ll see around, although it does come at a pretty penny. That said, the price does mean that you get a lot of extra connectivity out of the whole thing, including specific compatibility with the PlayStation 5 and Sony soundbars, as well as the ability to pair a Bravia Cam so that you can use your TV to hold meetings.
