The prospect of Paschal Donohoe becoming the next managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) was all but ended last Friday.

Just as the Coalition was being walloped by voters in two ill-advised referendums, the Financial Times reported that EU finance ministers would express support for Kristalina Georgieva to serve another five years – which was borne out yesterday after she told Reuters she wanted a second term.
