After defeat in the first leg, Arteta's side won a cagey second leg 1-0 to force extra time and penalties before goalkeeper David Raya emerged as the hero.

Amid wild celebrations at the Emirates, images showed Arteta trying to shake Conceicao's hand, but appearing to get a telling off from the Porto manager instead.

Both men were clearly furious and had to be pulled apart, as Arteta walked away from the scene shaking his head.

Then, in an explosive post-match press conference, Conceicao claimed Arteta insulted his family in Spanish during the clash.

He said: "Mikel Arteta turned to the bench during the game and insulted my family in Spanish. At the end, I told him that the person he insulted is no longer among us.

"Let him worry about training his team, which has more than enough quality to play a lot better."

Build-up to the game was dominated by a war of words between the two bosses over their respective approaches to the first leg.

Arteta criticised Porto for using a low block with 'no intention of playing' and Conceicao hit back by saying: "It’s an opinion. They wanted to play, we wanted to win."

Those comments were put to Arteta on the eve of the second leg and the Arsenal manager said: "There is no interpretation, those are strong words."

During the second leg, Conceicao was involved in a separate altercation with Arsenal forward Kai Havertz.

The Germany star shoved the Porto boss while challenging for a ball which was already out of play, causing a collision.

Speaking after the game, Arteta was keen to focus on what was an incredible night for the Gunners, who ended a 14-year run without reaching the Champions League quarter-finals.

"So happy - 14 years is a long time for a club like Arsenal not to do what we've done today," he told TNT Sports.

"We had to dig in and find the magic moment we did at the end today. So proud and so happy.

"You are very nervous. You are hoping for the best but you know it's a bit of a lottery. We did our preparation yesterday and the day before just in case and it really helped so credit to the goalkeeping coaches as well.

"We have started to create an unbelievable energy in the stadium and we are all pushing to get it done, and together we've done it.

"Unbelievable. That's where we want to be. We have been patient and this is where we want to be."
