A top official from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) recently emphasised the necessity for Bangladesh to establish a comprehensive national wage-setting system.

According to media reports, Tuomo Poutiainen, the ILO country director for Bangladesh, highlighted the inadequacy of the current national wage policy and stressed the importance of discussions and the implementation of a system capable of predicting and addressing inflation and maintaining competitive wage and price points.

Poutiainen also discussed the ILO’s efforts to enforce international compliance standards in 457 garment factories through its Better Work programme, with plans to expand the coverage to more factories.

He also emphasised the importance of promoting social dialogues and modernising the insurance protection schemes to ensure the safety and well-being of workers, citing the recent Bailey Road fire incident as a reminder of the critical need for fire safety measures in industries.

Meanwhile, Amirul Haque Amin, president of the IndustriALL Bangladesh Council, stressed the importance of protecting the workers, especially considering the profitability of companies, and emphasised the need for healthy workplaces and industrial relations.
