Nine close associates and aides of TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh, who is under suspension, have been called by the CBI to appear before the agency on Monday, according to officials.

The nine people are suspected by the agency of being involved in the January 5 attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials and of inciting the public to attack the team during their raid of Sheikh’s premises at Sandeshkhali, West Bengal. They have been asked to appear at CBI office, Nizam Palace, Kolkata.

According to sources, Sheikh, whose involvement in the attack is being investigated, is being held by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) till March 14.

Three cases associated with incidents on January 5—when ED officials were attacked by a crowd estimated to number in the thousands—have been turned over to the CBI. These incidents are related to the agency’s ongoing investigation into an alleged ration distribution scam, which has resulted in the arrest of a former state minister.

In addition to attacking an ED team that was conducting a raid on Shahjahan’s Sandeshkhali house in relation to the purported ration scam, Shahjahan and his men are also charged with extortion, land grabs, and sexual assaults of women.

On February 29, Sheikh was taken into custody by the state police, following a directive from the high court permitting the arrest of Sheikh by the CBI, ED, or West Bengal police. The High Court decided on Wednesday to give the CBI custody of Shahjahan, the main accused, and the case related to the attack on ED officers, along with a contempt notice to the CID. The state police engaged in a game of hide and seek in this situation, the court added.
