The Moroccan National Airports Office (ONDA) has embarked on a significant project to modernize and expand the capabilities of Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport, Morocco’s busiest and most crucial air hub to boost airline travel.
In a move that underscores the growing cooperative ties between Morocco and Spain, ONDA has selected Ineco, a prominent Spanish engineering firm known for its proficiency in transportation infrastructure, to develop a comprehensive masterplan for the airport.
This collaboration is not just a step towards enhancing Morocco’s aviation infrastructure but also reflects the strengthened diplomatic relations between the two nations, particularly following Spain’s support of Morocco’s position in the Moroccan Sahara dispute.
Ineco’s involvement in the project is pivotal. The company is set to undertake an exhaustive analysis of the airport’s current infrastructure, including passenger terminals, runways, and other essential aeronautical facilities. The main goal of this initiative is to create a strategic roadmap that outlines necessary infrastructure developments and equipment upgrades to ensure the airport can efficiently manage future increases in passenger traffic. Sergio Vázquez Torrón, Ineco’s president, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the significant impact it could have on enhancing Morocco’s transportation network. He underscored Spain’s leadership in airport planning and Ineco’s vast experience in executing successful airport development projects across the globe.
The masterplan will address several key aspects of the airport’s future operations. This includes making detailed passenger traffic forecasts, analyzing the baggage handling system, and projecting anticipated aircraft movement patterns. Additionally, the plan will evaluate the airport’s current capacity constraints and propose strategies to bolster efficiency and accommodate growing passenger volumes. Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport, located southeast of Casablanca, is a vital component of Morocco’s air travel network, handling over a third of the country’s air traffic. With passenger numbers continuing to rise, reaching nearly 10 million in 2023, the significance of this airport in Morocco’s transportation ecosystem is increasingly prominent.
This initiative is timely, aligning with Morocco’s ambitious aspirations to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup. By focusing on infrastructure development, particularly within the aviation sector, Morocco is strategically positioning itself to manage the expected surge of visitors and participants for the global sporting event.
