Met Éireann has extended a Status Yellow rain warning for two counties amid a warning of potential flooding in southern counties.

A status yellow rain warning will be in place for counties Cork and Kerry from 3pm on Monday until 9am on Wednesday.

The alert was initially due to end at 3pm on Tuesday.

The national forecaster has predicted spells of heavy rain for the two counties coupled with high tides and onshore winds continuing into Wednesday morning.

There is also a risk of localised flooding and wave overtopping.

For the rest of the country it will be mostly cloudy today, with mist and patches of light rain or drizzle.

The rain will develop in Munster and Connacht this afternoon, extending eastwards across Leinster and south Ulster in the evening.

The rain might turn heavy at times, especially in the southwest.

Temperatures will range between 7 and 11 degrees, with light and variable winds.

Unusually high tides might bring the risk of coastal flooding continuing through Tuesday, the national forecaster has warned.
