Sex in period drama and actual royal romps have had an inverse relationship. In a former era, when Fergie was toe sucking on a yacht and Diana was sharing her husband with another woman, period drama about the royals – think of all those Kenneth Branagh adaptations – was buttoned up, stuffy and respectful. Thirty years later, the current generation of young Windsors are notably less scandalous, and yet on screen everything’s gone a bit Jilly Cooper for fictional royalty.

Bridgerton’s glossy debauchery made it one of the biggest hits of the last few years on Netflix while The Favourite’s bisexual love triangle cleaned up at the Oscars.
