An exclusive Sunday Independent/Ireland Thinks exit poll today reveals why voters decided overwhelmingly to reject the Government’s proposed family and care amendments to the Constitution.

The findings amount to a damning indictment of Government decisions and its handling of the campaign around the referendums. The family referendum was defeated by 67.7pc to 32.3pc, while the care referendum went down even more emphatically, by 73.9pc to 26.1pc. The turnout nationally was 44.4pc.
