If you need a palate cleanser between long RPGs, try this great Game Pass shooter

Fans of RPGs have been eating well since the beginning of 2024. In fact, there have been more amazing games in this genre alone than most people could reasonably keep up with. As much as I love a deep RPG, even I have to admit I’ve been feeling a little burnt out after my third or fourth 100-hour adventure. Before we get hit with Unicorn Overlord, Rise of the Ronin, and Dragon’s Dogma 2 this month alone, I felt the need for something different to cleanse my palate.

That’s when I found Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun.

I knew about Warhammer 40K: Boltgun from when it launched in May of last year, but a certain Nintendo game also hit that month that was my main focus. After that, I unfortunately let the game slip off my radar until it reappeared on this month’s Game Pass list. With just a bit of time between games, I thought it would be a low-commitment game to dabble in before I was sucked into my next RPG.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun knows what it is and doesn’t pretend to be anything else. This is a boomer shooter — a game in the style of the original Doom and Duke Nukem — where your only goal is to mercilessly murder anything that moves as you navigate maze-like levels. While speed and brutality are the name of the game, Boltgun still feels meaty and heavy. Every step your marine takes sounds like a 10-ton machine and every bullet fired from the titular rifle kicks like a tank shell, and yet the rate at which you sprint and shoot makes you feel like an invincible force of nature.

What I appreciate most about Boltgun is how it so effortlessly urges you to keep going. Every second you’re not engaged in combat, you’re scanning the environment for your next target. Everything from the sound design and weapon feedback to every bit of pixelated gore that gushes from the unfortunate monster on the other end of your weapon makes combat as gripping as it is satisfying. The most you have to worry about is when your dash cooldown is up, how many grenades you have, or what weapon you need to switch to. It’s almost the polar opposite of the more strategic and methodical pace of the recent RPGs, which is exactly what I needed.

Unless you’re adamantly opposed to first-person shooters as a whole, I can’t recommend Boltgun highly enough. I went in expecting a simple “turn your brain off” shooter to kill some time with, and in some ways that’s exactly what I got. This is a pure power fantasy game, but not shallow or low effort. Whether you have Game Pass or not, don’t skip Boltgun like I did.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is available now on PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC, as well as through Xbox Game Pass as well.

Warhammer Skulls stream spotlights Darktide, Boltgun, and more

Games Workshop held a Warhammer Skulls livestream today where it gave updates on existing and announced Warhammer games, in addition to revealing a couple of new ones. 
Fatshark kicked things off by affirming that the release date for Xbox console-exclusive Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is still September 13 via a new cinematic trailer. In the wake of Starfield and Redfall's delay to 2023, this is currently one of the bright spots of Xbox Game Pass' 2022 lineup. As a cooperative shooter, it seems like Warhammer 40,000: Darktide will be a good fit for Xbox Game Pass in the same way that games like Back 4 Blood and The Anacrusis are.

We also got a look at other announced but unreleased Warhammer titles like sports RPG Blood Bowl 3 and AAA action game Space Marine 2, but there wasn't much in the way of substantial updates for them outside of a new beta for Blood Bowl 3. In addition, 2D cooperative shooter Warhammer 40,000: Shootas, Blood, and Teef got an October 20 release, but isn't currently confirmed for Xbox Game Pass like Darktide. You can "WAAAGH!! with da Boyz" according to the trailer, though. 
Updates for Warhammer games like Total War: Warhammer 3, Chaos Gate Daemonhunters, Vermintide 2, Battlesector, Inquisitor -- Martyr, and some mobile titles also populated the showcase, but the most interesting parts of Warhammer Skulls were the new announcements. Players that enjoy Hearthstone, Legends of Runeterra, or Marvel Snap will welcome the announcement of Warforge, an upcoming Warhammer CCG for PC and mobile that also contains a healthy amount of single-play content.
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun - Reveal Trailer
Those looking for a meatier Warhammer experience will want to keep an eye on the newly announced Boltgun and Rogue Trader. Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is an FPS game from Auroch Digital that emulates old-school PC shooters like Doom with its visuals and gameplay. It's part of the ever-growing boomer shooter trend and launches for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X in 2023. Meanwhile, Pathfinder: Kingmaker developer Owlcat Games is creating Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, which is, surprisingly, the first traditional CRPG set in the Warhammer universe. If you enjoyed the Pathfinder video games or Pillars of Eternity, keep an eye on Rogue Trader.

Overall, it's clear that Warhammer fans have a lot of options at their disposal right now when it comes to new games to play. Some of these, like Darktide and Space Marine 2, also have the potential to become more mainstream than we might expect.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is overflowing with fun ways to interact with its world, many of which are minigames that task you with completing challenging objectives or winning games. There are four pink Cactuars to find in Costa Del Sol during the Cactuar Capers scavenger hunt, and they're scattered throughout the town in various spots — with some more cleverly hidden than others. You'll need to find all four of them to complete Cactuar Capers, which can be a bit of a hassle since all you have in your possession to help with that is a map that gives you general locations.

Luckily, the Shinra executive you're teamed up with will be nearby each of the pink Cactuars commenting on how they must be in that area somewhere. This will help you discern where to look, though our photos further down below will show you precisely where the pink Cactuars are hiding.
