In 2012 my relationship with God had been a quiet standoff for decades. I was brought up lower case “c” catholic, had endured a Christian Brothers school, and then, the moment I left home, only ever saw the inside of a church when I was wandering around a city in a warm European country.

I was mostly agnostic; I had accepted Pascal’s wager and had the odd word with Himself/Herself in times of crisis. I didn’t think an awful lot about it most of the time.
