5A girls championship final: No. 2 Roosevelt 69, No. 4 Northfield 63
11:46 a.m.: The Nighthawks had two shots at the bucket to tie this thing. Both rimmed out. And that’s going to be game. Ryanne Bahnsen-Price scores three points straight, Roosevelt (26-2) hangs on for its second consecutive 5A girls championship. A tremendous comeback from Northfield (24-4) that fell just short.
11:37 a.m.: Roosevelt punches right back with buckets from Brynn Price and Maddie Moyers, the latter on a fast break following a Northfield miss, giving the Rough Riders a 63-56 lead with 3:12 to go. — Matt Schubert
11:35 a.m.: The Nighthawks are three points away. And now it’s their full-court press that is causing problems. Faith Nelson gets a pair of steals, converting one into a bucket of her own and dishing to Nashara Ellerbee for thhe other. Roosevelt leads 59-56 with 4:25 left and this place is electric. — Matt Schubert
11:22 a.m.: Northfield refuses to go away, with Madison Bethel among the major reasons why. Bethel knocked down three shots in that quarter, and now the Nighthawks trail, 51-43, going into the fourth quarter. We got a game, folks. — Matt Schubert
11:13 a.m.: In one of the most bizarre sequences of the weekend, Northfield gets T’ed up for six players on the court (10 seconds after the sixth player ran off) and then a Nighthawks assistant gets a technical foul, too. Ryanne Bahnsen-Price buries all four free throws and a game that looked like it was about to turn Northfield’s way is suddenly right back to Roosevelt. It’s 51-39 Rough Riders with 2:30 left in the third quarter. — Matt Schubert
11:07 a.m.: Northfield is hanging around, just like they did against Air Academy. Madison Bethel buries back-to-back jumpers in transition and the lead is down to single digits. Roosevelt up 46-39 with 4:20 left in the third quarter. — Matt Schubert
10:54 a.m.: The Nighthawks have come to life! In the span of one minute to close out the second quarter, a 19-point Roosevelt lead was slashed to 10. Aliyah Herron delivered the highlight of the game so far for Northfield, crossing over Kyla Hollier on the break and leaving the Rough Rider sliding on the ground, before banking in a 3. Three more Northfield buckets later, the score is 39-29 at halftime and the Nighthawks crowd is back in this.
That one minute aside, however, this game has belong to Roosevelt sophomore Kyla Hollier, who goes into halftime with 19 points, five rebounds and two steals on 7-of-12 shooting. Herron leads the Nighthawks with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting. — Matt Schubert
10:35 a.m.: Northfield’s buckets are just too few and too far between. Meanwhile, Kyla Hollier has been magnificent for Roosevelt, burying a pair of 3-pointers and working the Nighthawks inside to the tune of 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Roosevelt leads 31-17 with 4:03 left in the second quarter. — Matt Schubert
10:31 a.m.: The Rough Riders full-court press is a problem. Two steals lead two back-to-back Kyla Hollier buckets, and now the Roosevelt lead has grown to 29-15 with 5:30 left in the second quarter. Northfield is in serious trouble. — Matt Schubert
10:22 a.m.: Roosevelt just smothered Northfield in the first quarter, dominating the boards (12-5) and forcing eight Nighthawks turnovers. The shooting hasn’t been great, but when three of your five baskets are 3s, that works. Rough Riders lead 19-9 going into the second quarter. — Matt Schubert
10:15 a.m.: Northfield has finally shown up. After starting 0 for 6 from the field with four turnovers, the Nighthawks have scored back-to-back buckets to make it 11-4 with 3:32 left in the first quarter. With a decided edge with the crowd, all the Nighthawks need is a spark. — Matt Schubert
10:08 a.m.: Roosevelt immediately takes charge of this game, scoring seven straight points, including two baskets from Kyla Hollier in the game’s first 30 seconds. Northfield is going to have to dig itself out of a hole for the second straight game. — Matt Schubert
9:59 a.m.: Championship Saturday hath arrived!
We’ll be here all day covering all six championship games between Class 4A, 5A and 6A, and we begin with one that should be a dandy: No. 2 Roosevelt (25-2) vs. No. 4 Northfield (24-3) in the 5A girls title game.
Roosevelt is going for its second straight 5A title, while Northfield is looking for its first in program history. The Nighthawks had to pull off an epic comeback just to get here. Do they have enough left in the tank to take down the defending champs? — Matt Schubert
