Letter: Will Checkmate return to a greener pasture?
The best time to view “Checkmate,” a bronze stallion and rider sculpture, is at early sunrise. This prized sculpture is owned by the town of Avon. The safest viewing needs to be before traffic gets heavy on the roundabout on Avon Road and Benchmark Road. Drivers and pedestrians do not dare look at it because of traffic coming in and going out.
Obviously, for more public exposure, the town moved it to the roundabout from the outdoor community center located about a block away, behind the Wyndham and Avon Center .
Unfortunately, the bronze stallion and rider statue is exposed to traffic exhaust and seems to be losing its luster.
Or, is it losing its luster since no little children can gleefully play at its base or it is missing being constantly photographed and admired? I hope Checkmate can be returned to its original greener pasture.
