DENVER, Colo. – The Wild have had an active Friday ahead of the 2 p.m. league trade deadline, with the biggest moves sending veteran forward Pat Maroon to the Boston Bruins and center Connor Dewar to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Maroon was on an expiring contract and set to become a free agent after the season.
In return, the Wild received left winger Luke Toporowski and a conditional sixth-round draft pick in 2026. Toporowski, 22, has played in 96 games and recorded 46 points (22 goals) over two seasons with the Providence Bruins in the American Hockey League. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound native of Bettendorf, Iowa, will report to the Iowa Wild.
Maroon had four goals and 12 assists in 49 games this season. Maroon is on the mend from back surgery but has resumed skating. He offered plenty of experience as a three-time Stanley Cup champion.
Dewar, selected by the Wild in the third round in 2018, contributed 10 goals and four assists in 57 games this season. He has had a point for the Wild in three of the last five games. He has played in 173 games for the Wild, with 18 goals and 20 assists. The Wild received a fourth-round pick in 2026 and center Dmitry Ovchinnikov. Ovchinnikov will continue to play with the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League (AHL).
The Wild had until 2 p.m. Friday when the NHL trade deadline expired to decide other moves after already dealing forward Brandon Duhaime to Colorado on Thursday for a third-round draft pick in 2026.
Duhaime is expected to make his Avalanche debut Friday night at Ball Arena against his former team.
"No question it's going to be strange," Colorado coach Jared Bednar said about the matchup. "Hopefully he's not passing to their jersey."
With the Wild since he made the team out of training camp in 2021, Duhaime called the organization "incredible" and mentioned he has "nothing but appreciation" when asked what his time with the Wild meant to him. He had a chance to say goodbye to Wild players before he made the trip to Colorado from Arizona where the Wild were when they traded Duhaime.
"Pretty emotional," said Duhaime, who packed extra clothes with him in the event a trade happened. "Not the best time but excited to be here."
Unlike the Wild, the Avalanche are comfortably in a playoff spot and contending for first place in the Central Division.
"Being part of a team like this and how good they are and their momentum and where they're headed right now, it's a good path," Duhaime said, "and I'm excited to be on this journey with them."
Like Duhaime and Maroon, Dewar was on an expiring contract.
"They're important players. They're good players," President of Hockey Operations/General Manager Bill Guerin said Thursday, referring to the interest in Maroon and Dewar. "We're not just giving them away."
The Wild also announced the acquisition of forward Turner Elson from the New York Rangers in exchange for forward Nic Petan.
Elson, 31, has played in 579 games and recorded 263 points (117 goals, 146 assists) over 13 AHL seasons. Petan, 28, has 281 points (92 goals, 189 assists) in 281 career AHL games over eight seasons, the last two in Iowa. Elson will report to Iowa.
The Wild is adding in other ways, too.
Marat Khusnutdinov is expected to arrive in Minnesota Friday night after securing a work visa. The Wild signed the Russian forward to a two-year, entry-level contract last week.
Earlier this week, they signed veteran defenseman Zach Bogosian to a two-year, $2.5 million contract extension.
"He's played very well," Guerin said of Bogosian. "He's stayed healthy. He's an important piece in the dressing room. I think his experience, the way he plays the game, makes him very valuable to us. I'm happy we were able to get it done."
