On Wednesday, March 5, Gov. Jared Polis ordered for flags to be flown at half-staff on Sunday, March 10, from sunrise to sunset in honor of Eagle County paramedic Steve Zuckerman.

Zuckerman, a full-time paramedic with the Eagle County Paramedic Services, died while responding to a backcountry rescue call on Friday, Feb. 23. He was 61 years old.

Zuckerman worked Beaver Creek Ski Patrol for more than 25 years and started as a part-time paramedic with Eagle County Paramedic Services in April 2008. He joined the full-time staff in May 2013. He was a member of the Search and Rescue team, a field trainer and was in training as a critical care paramedic. He also served as medical director for the World Cup races in Beaver Creek.

Polis ordered that the flags be lowered in Zuckerman’s honor on the day of his Colorado memorial service. The service will be held on Sunday at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek at 5:30 p.m.

Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. and parking will be available at Ford Hall and Villa Montane parking structures. Additional parking will be available at the Bear and Elk lots on Highway 6 and attendees can take the bus up to the Vilar Performing Arts Center. As parking (and space) is limited, public safety agencies are asked to leave large vehicles at home. If large response vehicles arrive, they will be directed to park in the Elk Lot.

Following the memorial service at the Vilar, attendees are invited to migrate to the bottom of the ski area (outside McCoy’s patio) for a snowcat procession and fireworks in Steve’s honor. Powder 8 BAR (located at the base of Chair 6) will be open from 7 to 8:30 p.m. after the memorial.

As capacity at Vilar Performing Arts Center is limited, the memorial will also be live-streamed on YouTube: YouTube.com/watch?v=vueeCMmfWRs
