With its well-organized cabin, the 2024 Honda Pilot is a top choice for drivers who routinely load up with passengers.
What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Honda Pilot? What does it compare to?
The 2024 Honda Pilot is a three-row crossover SUV with a big interior and decent V-6 power. Shop it against the Ford Explorer, Toyota Highlander, and Kia Telluride.
Is the 2024 Honda Pilot a good SUV?
Big and reasonably stylish for a three-row crossover SUV, the 2024 Pilot makes a solid case for itself. Middling fuel economy and some quirky tech hold it back against the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade. We give it a TCC Rating of 6.8 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2024 Honda Pilot?
Honda made no major changes for 2024. The Pilot was revamped for 2023 with blockier styling, an off-road-ish trim level, and a muscular V-6 engine.
Its blunt front end gives way to a side profile that looks like an updated version of some 1990s classics. The available TrailSport trim delivers a hint of off-road utility with its higher stance, real skid plates, and recovery points.
Inside, most versions come with a 9.0-inch touchscreen that juts out of an otherwise simple, contemporary dashboard.
The Pilot makes use of a smooth 3.5-liter V-6 rated at 285 hp, which clicks its way through 10 gears to either the front or, optionally, all four wheels. The gearbox works silently in the background to make the most of all that power, but the Pilot will beg for fuel-station stops. Look for just 21 mpg combined for most models with all-wheel drive. The TrailSport’s slightly lifted suspension nudges that down by 1 mpg. Honda doesn’t currently offer a Pilot hybrid.
A calm, comfortable ride with standard 18-inch wheels becomes only slightly harsher with the bigger 20s fitted to higher-trim versions. The TrailSport can be a bit bouncy with its off-road tires. It’s definitely more capable in the rough than other versions, but we question how many owners will venture beyond a grass parking lot.
More importantly, the cabin swallows up as many as eight passengers is solid comfort. It’s not quite as spacious as Honda’s own Odyssey van, but it comes close. Second-row captain’s chairs are widely available.
The IIHS gives the Pilot a Top Safety Pick award, but it didn’t perform as well in updated tests the agency will implement in the coming year. The expected array of driver-assistance tech includes adaptive cruise control, active lane control, and a driver-attention monitor. Blind-spot monitors come on all but the lowest trims.
How much does the 2024 Honda Pilot cost?
Honda asks $38,465 for the Pilot LX with front-wheel drive, which is a bit spartan with its unheated cloth seats and dinky 7.0-inch touchscreen. All-wheel drive costs about $2,000 on models where it’s not standard. The $40,975 Sport tosses in rear-seat climate controls and butt warmers up front for a hefty $3,000 more, at which point you might as well drop another three grand for the EX-L with its leather trim, 9.0-inch display, and power tailgate. The $53,855 Pilot Elite tops the lineup.
Where is the 2024 Honda Pilot made?
In Lincoln, Alabama.
2024 Honda Pilot Styling
The Pilot throws back to the days of the first Passport—aka the Isuzu Rodeo.
Is the Honda Pilot a good-looking car?
The throwback styling cues work well with the big body and the more rugged stance it’s adopted in this generation. The no-nonsense interior works well with the assertive exterior, for a score of 7 here.
With its textured grille and C-shaped air intakes and a set of wedgy, slim LED headlights, the latest Pilot takes a different tack from the related Acura MDX. This Pilot does a better job of conjuring the SUV past—specifically, it calls up the first Honda Passport, which was a version of the Isuzu Rodeo. It’s mostly in the rear roof pillars and the angle they lean into.
The interior of the Pilot doesn’t work any retro cues, but it works well anyway. The statement piece on most models is a 9.0-inch touchscreen (it’s a measly but functional 7.0-inch unit on the base version). Honda avoided the stripped-down austerity of some SUVs that bury functions in the touchscreen interface. The Pilot still has a fair amount of switches and buttons, as well as a real shift lever. The dash sits high, too, and the overall effect of the interior is to seem more expansive without being too much larger.
2024 Honda Pilot Performance
Ten speeds and six cylinders suit the Pilot just fine, but it’s far from efficient.
Honda’s smooth and powerful V-6 earns a point above average here, as does the Pilot’s all-around composure, for a 7 in performance.
Is the Honda Pilot 4WD?
Honda will upgrade the Pilot’s standard front-wheel drive to a system that sends up to 70% of the V-6’s available torque to the rear end, then splits it between the rear wheels in proportion to their grip. It’s a little more complicated than the usual crossover AWD systems, but Honda deemed it necessary for its new TrailSport edition, which also has hill descent control and more knobby tires. AWD costs about $2,000 depending on the model, but it’s included on the Elite and TrailSport.
How fast is the Honda Pilot?
With its 285-hp V-6, 262 lb-ft of torque, and a 10-speed automatic, the Pilot puts out pretty much the same acceleration as it did in its last generation—only now, it also has up to seven drive modes that toggle through traction settings to extract more control over the power delivery. It’s still quick enough to pick up a point here—and much of that credit goes to the 10-speed automatic, which has been programmed for imperceptible low-end shifts and the ability to toggle down four gears at a time when the driver calls for power during a difficult pass.
The paddle shift controls might seem like overkill, but the drive modes make them more useful—while they also tailor the shift timing, throttle response, and steering weight. We could do without the Sport mode’s amplified engine sounds. But the Trail mode isn’t a gimmick: it feathers the controls at very low speeds to enable smoother rock crawling. It’s a moderately capable off-roader, so keep that in mind when trail-sporting—and in case it should need it, the Trail mode’s backed up by a standard hitch and a front skid plate.
It can house as many people as a minivan, but the Pilot eschews minivan-style light-touch steering for a moderately firm feel that helps when towing a trailer, for example. The Pilot can tow up to 5,000 pounds. And even on the big 20-inch or knobby 18-inch all-terrain tires, it still rides quietly, with a trace of wind noise that doesn’t disturb the calm cabin vibe.
2024 Honda Pilot Comfort & Quality
Shhh…don’t tell, but the Pilot blends SUV style with minivan utility.
With the Pilot, Honda accommodates as many passengers as a minivan, and saves space for their belongings in back. It’s a 9 here.
With better seats than in the prior version, the latest Pilot has near-luxury comfort for the front passengers. Most models have power adjustable heated seats; many models also come with leather upholstery and front-seat cooling. Front passengers get very good headroom and legroom, too, and their small items tuck away neatly in the Pilot’s deep console and storage bins, including a smartphone-friendly nacelle above the glovebox that can include a wireless smartphone charger. The Pilot has 14 cupholders, to spare you the headcount.
In the second row, a 40:20:40 split bench has a fold-down middle section that converts to an armrest with cupholders. That bench can be upgraded to twin captain’s chairs on the Pilot EX-L; the duo come standard on upper trim levels, cutting ultimate seating capacity from eight to seven people. On the top two Pilot trims, a removable middle seat pulls out of the floor mount and tucks into the cargo-area floor (or can be stowed in your garage). It weighs just 25 pounds and takes under a minute to yank out. In all configurations, 40.8 inches of legroom bests the prior Pilot and pairs with excellent headroom.
A pushbutton mechanism grants slide-away access to the third-row seat, where two 6-foot-tall people can sit in reasonable comfort. Most of the time, those seats will be folded down to boost the Pilot’s 22.4 cubic feet of cargo room to 60.1 cubic feet—or with the second row folded, more than 112 cubic feet.
We approve of the Pilot’s generally nicer materials and good fit and finish, but it’s still a practical crossover SUV with a wash-and-wear appeal.
2024 Honda Pilot Safety
The Pilot has some top safety scores, with some nuance.
How safe is the Honda Pilot?
The IIHS gives it a Top Safety Pick award, but there’s a catch—the Pilot has dropped from Good to Marginal with the updated front-impact test that the agency will incorporate into its ratings. For now, that award gives the Pilot a point here, with points also added for standard safety gear and options, and one for its five-star overall score from the NHTSA. It’s a 9 here.
The NHTSA scores earn a note here: they include four-star ratings for all front-impact tests, which round up to five stars overall once the flawless side-impact scores are averaged in.
All Pilots have automatic emergency braking, active lane control, adaptive cruise control down to a stop, a driver attention monitor, and automatic high beams. All but the LX have blind-spot monitors, and all except the LX and Sport get front and rear parking sensors. We’d spend up to get those features and the available surround-view camera system, since the Pilot’s angled rear pillars cut into the view.
2024 Honda Pilot Features
Step ahead to the Pilot EX-L for the best balance of value and luxury.
Honda fits the Pilot with a decent infotainment interface and base touchscreen plus a good roster of standard features. Altogether it offers drivers a good value, but its 3-year/36,000-mile warranty falls far behind the coverage from South Korean rivals and limits the Pilot to an 8 here.
The $38,465 Pilot LX comes with eight seats, four USB ports, power features, and a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. All-wheel drive costs about $2,000 on the Pilots that don’t offer it standard.
Which Honda Pilot should I buy?
We’d pick the $40,975 Pilot Sport model, which gains power heated front seats and three-zone climate control—but most people pick the $42,400 Pilot EX-L ($42,700 with a pair of captain’s chairs instead of a second-row bench). It has a 9.0-inch touchscreen, leather upholstery, wireless smartphone charging, and a power tailgate.
How much is a fully loaded Honda Pilot?
The $50,275 TrailSport gets off-road upgrades and a panoramic sunroof. But to spend as much as you can, step into a $53,855 Honda Pilot Elite, which has 20-inch wheels, a removable middle seat, navigation, 12-speaker Bose audio, digital gauges, a surround-view camera system, and a head-up display.
2024 Honda Pilot Fuel Economy
The Pilot’s EPA ratings pale against hybrid rivals.
Is the Honda Pilot good on gas?
It’s mediocre at best because it lacks a hybrid edition like the Toyota Highlander. With all-wheel drive, the Pilot earns EPA ratings of 19 mpg city, 25 highway, 21 combined. That earns a 2 for efficiency, which would be lower if we based it on the TrailSport and its 18/23/20-mpg rating.
The front-drive Pilot gets slightly better mileage at 19/27/22 mpg, on par with the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride—but far off the 35-mpg combined mark set by the Toyota Highlander Hybrid AWD (or 36 mpg for the front-wheel-drive Highlander Hybrid).
