And the trouble has continued during the game with a series of objects being thrown at the Brighton fans in attendance at the Stadio Olimpico.

"We are aware of the bottles, coins and lighters being thrown by home supporters into the away end," a statement from the Premier League club read.

"We have reported to UEFA and Italian Police and requested immediate action be taken."

The two Brighton fans who were stabbed at around midnight are said to have been attacked a group of seven masked people.

Both have now been discharged from hospital, with the attack taking place near the famous Colosseum.

Brighton fans have been advised to not wear club colours during their trip in Rome by the club.

The two sides are playing in the first leg of their round of 16 tie, and it was the Italian hosts who started the much better team.

Paulo Dybala opened the scoring after 12 minutes, with his finish around the goalkeeper being allowed after a VAR check.

On the stroke of half-time, Romelu Lukaku doubled their lead after he capitalised on Lewis Dunk's error and fired in.

Gianluca Mancini then made it 3-0 just after the hour mark, and the fourth was scored moments later by Bryan Cristante.

The result leaves Brighton with so much work to do at home in the second leg next week.

They did so well to advance out of the group stages but it looks as though their Europa League dream will come to an end.
