Trade, clean energy and maritime security will shape Australia’s future with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as China tries to raise its presence in the South China Sea, the former’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told the ASEAN summit in Melbourne that concluded yesterday.

Host Australia is observing the 50th anniversary of its ties with ASEAN as the bloc members have divergent views on China’s reported plans to expand diplomatic and military presence in the region.

“Australia commits to working with you to make sure the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, equality, and independence are upheld,” Albanese was quoted as saying at the three-day summit by global newswires.

The aim is to ensure the region is secure, resilient, open, inclusive and prosperous, he said.

ASEAN and Australian leaders adopted the ASEAN-Australia Leaders’ Vision Statement–Partnership for Peace and Prosperity and the Melbourne Declaration–A Partnership for the Future, affirming the commitments of both sides to strengthen the ASEAN-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
