'They shot my brother': 911 calls from deadly Mebane home invasion obtained by WRAL News

WRAL News on Wednesday received the 911 calls from a deadly home invasion over the weekend in Mebane.

At approximately 12:40 a.m. Sunday, deputies arrived at the home on U.S. 70 near the Buckhorn Road intersection, where they found the victim and two other residents inside.

According to authorities, the victim fired a shotgun at the home invaders, who returned fire and hit the man.

The victim, later identified as Jerry Lee Driggers, 58, of Mebane, was taken to Duke University Hospital, where he later died during surgery.

In the 911 audio, the caller said they shot his brother. The caller said they didn’t know who the people were.

“It was three or four men,” the caller said. “They just wanted to know how many people [were] in the house.”

All three intruders ran from the house after the exchange of gunfire.

Deputies found Clarence Brandon Hayes, 28, of Durham, outside in the parking lot of a business near the home. He had a gunshot wound to the abdomen and underwent surgery at an area hospital.

Authorities charged Hayes with the following crimes:

• First-degree murder
• First-degree burglary
• First-degree kidnapping
• Felony conspiracy
• Injury to real property

Authorities are still searching for two other suspects in the home invasion.
