Forecast in detail

A rapid series of wet weather systems roll through the region today into this weekend. Round one arrived last night and ends by this afternoon. Round two comes through tomorrow into tomorrow night. And round three arrives at some point Friday and probably consumes at least half the weekend. Rain totals for the week could reach 2 to 3 inches by Sunday. Between the rains we should be dry much of Thursday into Friday.

Today (Tuesday): A soggy morning with rain and patchy fog as temperatures lift into the 50s. Most rain should be light, but some moderate intensity is possible. Tomorrow (Wednesday): Our next rain could develop during the morning in our eastern and southeastern areas, but it may wait until afternoon elsewhere. The rain could be heavy at times during the afternoon, especially from near D.C. and Interstate 95 to the east. Highs range from the mid-50s to low 60s. Winds blow from the northeast at 5 to 10 mph. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Rain continues through the evening and could be heavy at times before diminishing overnight. Lows drop back to the mid-40s to near 50. Confidence: Medium

A look ahead

Showers could linger into early Thursday morning, and skies may struggle to clear out. But we should eventually see at least partly sunny conditions as highs top out somewhere in the upper 50s to mid-60s depending on how much sun we see. Thursday night looks cloudier again with patchy drizzle possible as lows range through the 40s. Confidence: Medium

Friday features partly to mostly cloudy skies with a chance that light rain moves in from west to east by mid- to late afternoon, or it may wait until Friday evening to get started. Highs should be in the mid- to upper 50s. Rain is likely again Friday night with lows in the 40s to near 50. Confidence: Low-Medium

Our soggy story continues with what looks like a rainy Saturday and perhaps Saturday night as well. Highs on Saturday aim for the 50s to near 60 with Saturday night lows in the 40s. The rain should let up or end by early Sunday. Partly sunny skies could return by Sunday afternoon as winds turn breezy with highs in the mid- to upper 50s. Confidence: Medium
