Xabi Alonso is unlikely to accept the head coach role at Bayern Munich before talking to Liverpool, according to one German football expert.

The Spaniard is in high demand after steering Bayer Leverkusen to the cusp of their first ever Bundesliga title.

Leverkusen hold a ten-point lead at the top of the table with ten games to play and appear set to end Bayern’s 11-title stranglehold on the title.

Alonso’s heroics has seen European football’s top tier keep close tabs on his availability with Bayern and Liverpool both preparing for a change of leadership at the end of the season.

Reports in the UK and Germany claim Bayern have already opened talks with Alonso despite the Bavarian club still being considered part of the title race with Leverkusen.

Although the 33-time Bundesliga champions have made the first move in their attempts to lure Alonso to the Allianz Arena, journalist Constantin Eckner says it is unlikely the Spaniard will agree to the move before speaking with Liverpool first.

“I can confirm they [Bayern] have opened talks with him and his management,” Eckner told talkSPORT. “It started right away after Bayern announced that Thomas Tuchel would leave the club at the end of the season.

“There is a gentleman’s agreement between Bayer Leverkusen and Xabi Alonso that if he gets the chance to go to a major club, then he is allowed to enter negotiations.

“Bayer Leverkusen are still in the mix as his contract runs for another few years and he has a release clause in his contract but it can only be triggered in 2025, so Leverkusen can receive a large compensation if he goes.

“I don’t think he will say yes to them [Bayern] before he talks to Liverpool, however I think Bayern are in a great position right now.
