Letter: The end justifies the means
Mark Lewis’s latest column, “It’s about what you get done,” has some unsettling implications. His basic idea is that the way to measure success is to consider the results. Regardless, it appears, whether it’s legal or moral.
Lewis gives the example of President Biden going ahead with student loan forgiveness, even though the United States Supreme Court has ruled that he does not have the power to do so. As Lewis puts it: “I have to give him credit for accomplishing something.”
Reminds one of the people in the ’30s who admired Mussolini because he made Italy’s trains run on time.
Lewis suggests that Biden apply this “can do” attitude to other pending issues, like handing frozen Russian assets over to Ukraine. No mention of the legality of such action. Yet further down, when taking up the southern border problem, Lewis states: “…we should not reward those who cross illegally by allowing them to, when captured, claim asylum.” Which way does he want it?
Nor does Lewis deal with the fairness question. If student loans are “forgiven,” they don’t just disappear. Someone has to pay them. Here, it is the United States taxpayers. How fair is this to those who paid off their student loans, or who never had student loans because they didn’t go to college?
